Opening Editorial
BIGGEST PLEASURE of the month in the course of our reportorial duties is the news that the beauty industry's campaign for the sale of WAR STAMPS AND BONDS is showing splendid results. Some really remarkable records have been made (see page 70 for details). But this is a job for everyone.... and thatmeans you! Put your best ef- forts into the sale of WAR STAMPS AND BONDS and let your monthly reports show Uncle Sam that the beauty shops know how to help win this war, too!
The operator shortage plus the increased demand for shop services is posing many a problem.... chiefly, how to take in all this available business and consequent profit. Until action is taken by the industry itself to modify some of the restrictions which now make it impossible to alleviate the shop labor shortage, it behooves every beautician to snap out of lazy-dazy habits and speed up output.
THE EDITOR'S GUESTS this month have been queried with that very thing in mind, and our searching has turned up some practical hints on short cuts that will enable you to handle more patrons even though your staff may be decimated by war industry and the draft. Take manicuring, for example. Don't turn down manicure appointments because you haven't time for them. Instead, shorten your manicure time as Paul suggests in his excellent article, and you'll be able to handle three manicures an hour instead of two! As for permanent waving, look into the short cuts outlined by Thomas Kouchoukos, and you'll find many extra minutes for extra services. Marguerite Ventura's fine scalp service follows a strict routine that allows for no wasted time. Frank Leben's method of shaping naturally wavy hair has a time-saving angle, too, because it makes this type of hair easier to handle in every service. The color rinse technique that Oneita Reed outlines adds a few minutes to a hair service, it's true, but it takes less time to trade up the patron you already have by selling her an "extra" than it does to sell an additional patron from scratch! Anything that makes your coiffures more lasting has its time-saving aspect, as Louis has found in his fascinating Crisscross Curl. Faced by "boom town" problems, Fay Brown has found time doubly precious and has wisely adapted her methods of management to make the most of it. And because short hair offers many a short out and time-saver to shops and patrons alike, special emphasis is put on this darling of fashion by this month's stylists.... among others, Martin Weitzner in his mode for Fall bonnets, Harold Frauenhoffer, Victor Gorgas, Al Tate and Duarte.
