Pin curls - Questions and Answers

Genuine questions in vintage articles from the 1940s. I'll be adding more Q and A's on pin curls to this entry as I come across them in my collection

Q. Will you please give me a few pointers on the method of making waves by means of pin curls? When I try this technique, my waves always turn out bumpy and uneven.

A. Before you begin to set the hair, have clearly in mind the style you wish to create. Place rows of pin curls in the same lines you wish the waves to take in the completed hairdress; that is, if the side hair is to be brushed back from the face so that the waves will be vertical, consider your rows of pin curls as running also in a vertical direction.

All pin curls in the first row are wound in the same direction and are made of divisions exactly the same size, the size being determined by the width of the waves you wish to obtain. The second row of curls is wound in a direction opposite to that of the first row. Each row is alternated in this manner, one row of curls being made for each wave.

This alternation of the direction of winding each row and the uniformity of size of the pin curls are the keynotes to success in obtaining smooth, deep waves when the hair is brushed and combed.

Q. I have been having a little difficulty with pin curls. They fit closely enough to the scalp, but the ends never form a ringlet as tight as I want. Is this because I don't form the curls right or because the hair isn't curly enough ?

A. You are probably winding the ends of the strand too loosely. Try removing your finger from the curl just before you reach the ends. Then form the ends into circles of slightly smaller diameter than those on the upper part of the strand. Be sure the ends of the strand are secure when the curl is pinned. The strength of the permanent wave will influence the lasting qualities of the pin curls but it isn't responsible for the droopiness of the ends when the pin curls have been freshly set.

Q. How can I form a good wave by means of pin curls in the hair along the forehead? Although I wind one row of pin curls clockwise and the next counterclockwise, when I comb the curls they do not blend into a smooth wave. Will you please tell me how to control the curly mass of hair?

A. Make the pin curl blockings of uniform size, so that each is comprised of about the same thickness of hair. Placement of the curls has much to do with the beauty, depth and durability of the waves. I find that placing the curl's so that they overlap each other helps produce a smoother wave and avoids any tendency of the waves to split.

When arranging hair along the forehead to form a wave, comb or brush the hair over your hand, slightly stretching out the hair so that the line of the waves can be seen. Loosen the hair and press in the waves with fingers and comb. Should you wish to give thin hair a little additional body, some of the under portion may be ruffed or back-combed.
