Opening Editorial

FUSSINESS IS OUT.... and practical wearability is in! That's the rule for hairdos today, and it's as applicable to the gayest holiday modes as to the hairdresses that do full time duty in the wartime, workaday world. Aware of this timely trend, THE EDITOR'S GUESTS combine, in the styles presented this oath, the easy—to—wear, eat groomed lines essential to today's pace with the dash and sparkle that befit holiday festivities.

Louis at Dante does it with brief brief curls so trickily turned that you have the impression of a longish updo. Miss Kay and Ruth Holmes brush curls upward, too. Anton Birnkammer and Peter Jung show how it can be accomplished by means of Marcel waving as well as finger waving. Arthur Riegger and J. Mules interpret the trend with two individual bang variations.

Two techniques many of you have been requesting are given in full detail this month by two of our wellknown contributors. Anton Birnkammer meets the demand for combing-out suggestions in the first of a series of articles on this subject. Thomas Frank demonstrates the much discussed French braid for which war workers are creating a new demand. A pertinent reminder for those inclined to overlook the importance of basic services in today's rush of business is offered by Anthony Brandel in a fine demonstration of shampooing. And Werner points out the sometimes forgotten virtues of the spiral permanent for some of those "problem heads."

No matter how busy shop appointments keep you, you should be selling cosmetics. War workers, in particular, want to buy them, and their demand is so eager that little sales effort is needed. The story of Mary Cullinane, whose war plant beauty shop caters to war workers exclusively, will be of interest to you.

....And now, as the Christmas season draws near, to our friends everywhere we wish the joys of a full Yuletide, and a speedy journey to peace on earth in the New Year.
